Rehabilitation

WHAT IS REHABILITATION?

Rehabilitation is similar to physical therapy in humans.  We will be using some of the same equipment you may find in a human gym or physical therapy office, as well as equipment made specifically for your pet’s rehabilitation.

Dr. Amanda Pedrick is our rehabilitation therapist.  In addition to being one of our veterinarians, she successfully completed coursework to become a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute.  She has a passion for improving your pet’s quality of life.  Dr. Pedrick feels that rehabilitation will help for you and your pet develop a stronger bond and live a fuller more active life.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM REHABILITATION?

Many pets can benefit from rehabilitation, especially those with arthritis and age related lameness, sprains, strains, pre and post surgical patients, neurologic conditions and non-surgical orthopedic conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Your pet’s first appointment will be at least one hour long and we ask any members of your family who will be helping with the rehabilitation process attend this appointment.  During this time we will discuss your goals for your pet, take measurements of your pet’s range of motion and muscle mass, as well as develop and demonstrate a personalized exercise plan for your pet at home.  We may also recommend joint supplements, weight loss, and other forms of lifestyle modification.

We will discuss follow up appointments based on your pet’s condition, your goals and your finances.  In general we initially recommend once weekly follow up appointments for the first six weeks but this will be discussed based on your pet’s specific condition.  These appointments are generally set as a drop off in the morning with an appointment for pick up later in the day.  Dr. Pedrick and one of our technicians will work with your pet and will adjust the at home exercise plan as your pet progresses towards our set goals.  At each discharge appointment you will be given written exercise instructions and a summary of your pets visit with us.  If you would like to be present for your pets follow up sessions this can be arranged with Dr. Pedrick.

We do our best to ensure that your pet has a positive experience at each of his/her visits and through the entire rehabilitation process, for this reason our technicians may check with Dr. Pedrick prior to scheduling your initial visit and follow up visits are usually scheduled at previous discharge appointments directly with Dr. Pedrick.

WHAT DOES THIS COST?

Your initial visit is $225 and will include at least a one hour consultation and written personalized at home exercise program.  Follow up visits cost $75-$100 per visit.  The frequency of follow-ups will be discussed with Dr. Pedrick during your initial consultation.  If you are interested in committing to a discounted 6 week plan please mention this to Dr. Pedrick at your initial consultation.

THANK YOU for your interest in rehabilitation!  If you have any questions or would like to set up an initial consultation please do not hesitate to contact us.
